Authors Raise Bar for Anatomy Education With Highly Anticipated Atlas of Anatomy

New York/Stuttgart - Thieme Publishers today announced the release of Atlas of Anatomy by renowned anatomists and teachers Anne M. Gilroy, Brian R. MacPherson, PhD, and Lawrence M. Ross, MD, PhD. This standard-setting masterpiece, featuring thousands of remarkable illustrations, is one of the finest single-volume atlases of human anatomy in existence. It is, arguably, the most significant addition to anatomy education published within the last 50 years. The book is ideal for anatomy students, healthcare professionals, and those searching for information about the human body.

"It was our intent to use these exceptional illustrations as the cornerstone of our effort in creating a concise single-volume Atlas of Anatomy for the curious and eager," state the authors.

Anne M. Gilroy was born in Jersey City, New Jersey and grew up in Teaneck, New Jersey. She presently works as an Assistant Professor of Surgery and Cell Biology at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, Massachusetts, where she is responsible for teaching first-year human gross anatomy. Since joining the university, she has created an exceptional, far-reaching program in clinical anatomy for medical students for their four-year education. She also teaches residents in plastic surgery, anesthesia, obstetrics and gynecology at UMass Memorial Medical Center.

Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Lawrence M. Ross is President of the American Association of Clinical Anatomists. He spent 27 years as a faculty member in the Department of Anatomy at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. During that time, he worked for 10 years as the Course Director of gross anatomy. He was a member of Michigan's State Anatomical board for 19 years. Dr. Ross now works as a professor in the department of neurobiology and anatomy at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston, Texas.

Dr. Brian R. MacPherson is the Vice Chair and Holsinger Endowed Professor of Anatomy in the Chandler Medical Center at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine located in Lexington, Kentucky. Originally from Canada, he spent 15 years at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada teaching gross anatomy. Currently, he is Secretary of the American Association of Clinical Anatomists.

The 700-page atlas merges the educational expertise of the authors with the virtuoso talents of the award-winning artists Karl Wesker and Markus Voll, who developed more than 2,000 full-color illustrations of unsurpassed quality and visual clarity. Each image conveys a stunning level of detail and is accompanied by easy-to-read labeling.

Atlas of Anatomy is arranged in a unique two-page spread format, with each spread acting as a self-contained lesson. Additional highlights include clinical correlates and images, such as radiographs, MRIs, CT scans, and endoscopic views. The book is part of the Thieme Anatomy program, which includes a free interactive anatomy website (www.winkingskull.com) as well as flashcards.

Groundbreaking and expertly structured, this new atlas provides readers with an accurate, three-dimensional understanding of the material. Based on Thieme’s award winning anatomy series by M. Schuenke, E. Schulte, U. Schumacher it provides all the necessary details for gaining a solid understanding of human anatomy.
