Thieme's Internship Program |

Do you like books, journals or electronic media and have always wondered which steps are involved to produce them? Are you interested in the medical book market or STM (scientific, technical, medical) publishing in general? Do you have a scientific background or an interest in those subjects? Do you have a background in magazine or book publishing? Are you interested in working for a genuinely international company? Do you feel tired of what you are doing right now and would like to take a time out, spending more time with BOOKS and JOURNALS? Would you like to get involved with one of the remaining independent publishing houses?
If you answered one or more questions with "yes" you might consider an internship with Thieme!
Thieme (pronounced tee-ma) is a major international medical
and scientific publisher with home offices in New York (established
in 1979), Stuttgart, Germany (established in 1886), Berlin, Duesseldorf, Delhi, Beijing and Singapore.
Currently, Thieme is rapidly expanding its American-based program
with medical books, journals, videos, CD-ROMs and DVDs. In addition
to 130 journals and a growing number of CD-ROM products, this
year the Thieme Publishing Group will publish more than 500
new books, all maintaining the company's reputation for high-quality,
thoroughly produced titles of immediate value to medical students,
physicians and scientists.
Thieme's internship program offers a unique opportunity to gain valuable experience in the field of medical publishing and to have direct contact with professionals in the field. Interns are required to provide general office assistance to all departments (phones, faxing, filing, xeroxing) but are strongly encouraged to specify an interest in one of the departments mentioned below. All interns are always welcome to attend essential office meetings such as editorial, production and sales meetings. The ideal candidate will have strong computer, communication and organizational skills. Previous book or magazine experience and language skills (especially Spanish) are a plus but not required.
Editorial
Have you ever wondered why your textbooks have the features they do, or maybe how your doctor can offer state-of-the-art medical care 10, 20 or even 30 years after they graduated from medical school? Learn everything about how a book is born from conception to publication. This is a great opportunity for those with any major who want to get a taste for the editorial side of professional publishing. Thieme is a leading publisher in such diverse fields as radiology, orthopedics, audiology and neurosurgery. What we do isn’t rocket science, but we are the best there is at brain surgery—books that is.
Production
Ever wondered what "F & G's" are, why books have a certain format, why they sometimes contain a few blank pages, and why they are fairly expensive? If these questions keep you awake at night and if you generally wonder how books are produced and what steps are involved from manuscript to finished title, consider this department. This is a great chance to learn about copyediting, design and printing. This department is ideal for detail-oriented candidates. Previous production experience is a great benefit.
Marketing
Are you interested in market research, direct mail, and copywriting? Our global marketing program includes direct mail, website, e-mail campaigns, space advertising, and book reviews published in professional journals. There are many different aspects of marketing you will be able to experience. Marketing Interns will work in a forward-thinking environment with true hands-on opportunities. This is for hard working, enthusiastic students desiring real-world Marketing experience in a short period of time. If you feel this sounds interesting to you then you might be a good match for us. Send in your resume today, we're looking forward to hearing from you!

The Web Internship offers an exciting opportunity to learn valuable web skills while working within the Marketing department. Responsibilities include assisting Website Coordinator with publishing and online duties, and performing Internet research. Applicants with HTML skills are preferred. Applicants interested in learning about web development and website design are urged to apply!
Sales
Do you know the feeling when you just had to buy a book because it was so interesting or beautiful or useful? If you would like to be convinced that only few books sell themselves, you might want to offer your support to the sales department. Get involved in compiling advance and promotional material, planning and organizing medical exhibits, dealing with distributors such as wholesalers and bookstores in the Americas and learn the tricks of the trade on the side! This is great for someone with good organizational skills. Previous bookstore or other sales experience, knowledge of Spanish and MS Access a plus.
Accounting
Do you like numbers? Are you interested in budgeting, long-term planning, currency hedging, acquisitions, credit risk management? If you have good analytical and numerical skills, the finance department is the place for you.
