We welcome contributions from all authors engaged in the field of Chinese Medicine. Please consider contacting us before submitting the article to find out if the section editor is broadly interested in the proposed subject. We accept articles, but also short pieces, for example on legal regulations or continuing education in a country, or a plain listing of organizations and societies. Articles can either be posted to us on a disk, or in a typed format, or emailed as an attachment.

All accepted articles are subject to the review and editing of the respective Almanac section editors. During the editorial process we might contact you with any queries. Please note that all Thieme books are published in American English.

The Thieme Almanac’s Editorial Department has prepared this Author Guide to aid you in the preparation of your manuscript. Please read and follow the instructions closely.

General

Please state the title of your article, your full name, degree, title, academic affiliation(s), current mailing address, telephone number, fax number, and email address on the title page.

Your article should be in English or accompanied by an English translation or abstract.

Make sure the article is clearly structured and is framed by a comprehensible introduction and conclusion.

Electronic Submission

Articles should be emailed as attachments (WORD) or presented on disk (PC formats). Save and name files according to the following convention: "(Abbreviated) title of article_name of author.doc", e.g. "Thieme Almanac Guidelines_Morrison.doc".

Manuscript Format

  • Please do not use Arabic, Hebrew, or Asian formatting.
  • Articles should be typed in 12-point font with 1.5 line spacing. Be sure to put one blank only between sentences. One blank line should be left between paragraphs (no indentation).
  • Italics should not be used for emphasis. If at all, use bold.
  • Do not format headings but number them through, e.g. 1., 1.1, 1.2, 2., etc.
  • Please insert a header in the document with the following information: Name of article, name of author, page number.
  • Please do not:
    • insert page or section breaks
    • use word breaks at the end of lines
    • use the comments or footnote function

References

References should be given for quotations, specific information referred to in the text, statistics, etc. References should not be made in the continuous text but numbered in brackets and listed at the end of the article. Please be sure to include complete bibliographical data for all references. References should include author(s), title of book/journal, date, publisher (for books), volume/issue number (for journals), and page number. Examples:

Citing a journal article:

Figures

Figures include photographs, graphs, illustrations, artwork, etc. (anything but a table). If figures are included, each figure should be labeled and cited in the text of the manuscript, and accompanied by a legend. The quality of each image must be sufficient for it to be reproduced clearly.

Save and name files according to the following convention: "(Abbreviated) title of article_name of author_figure number", e.g. "Thieme Almanac Guidelines_Morrison_1.tif".

Preferred file formats are TIFF, JPG, EPS, and PDF. We can accept photographs (please also send negatives) and material for scanning.

To create tables, the WORD processor’s table function should be used. Please do not use Excel!

Almanac Style Guide

  1. All pin yin should be lower case (except at the beginning of a sentence or in a heading) and italicized. Do not hyphenate pin yin terms. Examples: qi gong, tai ji quan.
  2. The terminology should be based on Nigel Wiseman and Feng Ye, A Practical Dictionary of Chinese Medicine. 2nd ed. Brookline, MA: Paradigm Publications; 1998. Examples: Use channel, not meridian. Use vacuity and repletion, not deficiency and excess.
  3. Acupuncture points should be referred to using italicized pin yin name and point number with a hyphen between letter(s) and number(s). Examples:
    • gallbladder GB: feng chi GB-20
    • lung LU: chi ze LU-5
  4. For herb names cite the pin yin followed by the pharmaceutical name (in brackets). Examples: huang qi (Radix astragali), mai men dong (Tuber ophiopogonis japonici).
  5. For herbal prescriptions cite the pin yin in upper case, followed by the English name (in brackets). Examples: Wu Li San (Five Ingredient Powder with Poria).
