Stuttgart, New York, July 2006 - Each year the Independent Book Publishers Association (PMA) recognizes excellence in independent publishing with the Benjamin Franklin awards, named after America’s most famous self-made man and publisher. This year the PMA honored the
Thieme Atlas of Anatomy: General Anatomy and Musculoskeletal System with two such awards. According to the jury, which was comprised of experts in the field, the
Thieme Atlas of Anatomy surpassed all other nominees in the categories of "Professional/Technical" and "Interior Design – 3 or more colors (adult)."
These honors follow on the heels of recent praise from a number of journals including the
Journal of Orthopaedic Sports and Physical Therapy. "The images are beautifully drawn and labeled, and it is clear that significant time and effort have gone into the organization of the material. In addition to clear and unique illustrations, this atlas departs from the typical anatomy atlas by combining explanatory text with the images, providing summarizing tables, and giving clinical applications for the material...Overall, a beautiful and well-organized atlas."
Medical students from a range of disciplines have expressed their appreciation for the book. A student of physical therapy at George Washington University, Danah Jack writes, "I love the large images and the simple, thorough, and clear way complicated ideas are presented." Virginia Klausmeier, studying human physiology program at the University of Oregon, writes "Wonderful images, very detailed views, and great dissections...The views are the best and the most applicable for the information."
The book has also received an enthusiastic and warm reception from faculty. N. Cross, PhD, of the Department of Anatomy at the University of New England writes, "I couldn’t be happier...[this is] an outstanding addition to the world of anatomy atlases." Duane Haines, PhD, in the Department of Anatomy at the University of Mississippi explains, "This is a book every teacher of gross anatomy must have in their personal library."
With the imminent release of second book in the series,
Neck and Internal Organs, and the
Image Collection DVD, featuring all 1,694 full-color illustrations from
General Anatomy and Musculoskeletal System, faculty, as well as students and practitioners, will soon have the opportunity to expand their personal libraries. For more information on the series and the forthcoming electronic products available, please visit
