Prof. emeritus Dr. med. Marco Mumenthaler

Marco Mumenthaler

Even after being a neurologist for almost 50 years, Prof. Marco Mumenthaler remembers numerous patients and their problems. For him, every patient history is "something unique". From dramatic situations, diagnostic and therapeutic successes and mistakes, to the patient's background and personality, these "experiences" comprise the "spice of a physician's everyday professional life." When treating a patient, Mumenthaler always tries to examine the patient's sickness, personality, and social background. Even after becoming Professor emeritus in 1990 and teaching in this capacity, Prof. Mumenthaler still heads a practice for neurological disorders.

Mumenthaler's greatest two priorities are keeping a detailed medical history, and a commitment to the patient that puts the patient's wellness, interests and needs first. Mumenthaler, who was born in Bern, Switzerland, dedicated his whole career to sharing his experiences with young doctors. He holds seminars and workshops in Europe and the United States, and constantly trains the physicians working for him. Mumenthaler propagates the practical approach by teaching onsite, at the patient's hospital bed, and prefers seminars to lectures. Personal contact with the patient has always motivated Mumenthaler to learn more about medicine: "I used to quote case histories during my seminars, because even in the age of evidence-based medicine, there is still a great value in personal experiences and anecdotes."

His multiple tasks as an internationally recognized expert in the field of Neurology have kept him busy, and his various missions as a member of the Red Cross International Committee have sent him to various war and crises areas. Prof. Mumenthaler always tries to combine the scientific interest in his field with the practical knowledge of a physician. Again and again, the 76-year-old preaches to his students that one "can effectively learn only from real, practice-related cases."

Prof. Mumenthaler will continue sharing his knowledge and experience as a neurologist through numerous publications and contributions in textbooks and journals. His latest publication, the Thieme flexibook, Neurology, is available now and has been expanded by online references. Click here to learn more about the book and to find ordering information.
