Thieme Publishers is seeking a highly motivated acquisitions editor to sign, maintain and develop its textbook lists in audiology, speech pathology and radiologic technology.
Job Title: Acquisitions Editor
General Overview:
To acquire new titles, manage lists of books, assist in the development of electronic products in assigned disciplines, and develop the program to keep it abreast of new trends in both the field and the needs of the markets.
Responsibilities:
- Program Development
- Establish a plan for signing new projects and revisions based on:
- trends in assigned disciplines
- strengths and weaknesses of competitors’ lists
- strengths and weaknesses of Thieme list
- Forecast front list titles as part of annual budgeting process
- Editorial Acquisitions
- Sign 12-15 new projects per year by researching and soliciting proposals in assigned disciplines
- thorough strategic planning, correspondence, travel
- develop and maintain a pool of proposal reviewers in assigned disciplines
- prepare proposals for discussion and approval by Thieme’s Editorial Board
- negotiate agreements with authors and editors
- Project management and development
- supervise editorial preparation of manuscripts for production (12-15 per year)
- assist in monitoring staff requirements and training
- assist in developing editorial guidelines
- Supervise an editorial assistant and provide guidance to part-time editorial assistants and interns
Collaboration with:
- production department to ensure accurate delivery of final manuscript and ensure on-time publication of high-quality products
- marketing and sales departments to promote products, and collaborate in the development of marketing plans, promotional messages and sales meetings
- editorial colleagues to coordinate development of products to optimize product potential
Required Background:
college degree
experience as an acquisitions editor or related editorial/publishing experience desirable
excellent interpersonal and communication skills
strong customer orientation
ability to travel 10%-20% of time
