 Description

Open Source Format is a novel approach to reporting scientific data. It addresses a common problem of today's publications. As a rule the author shows his data and tries to convey in an optimal way the facts of which he is convinced. The shortcoming of doing so consists in the fact that the selection of data and figures and especially their interpretation and the conclusions drawn are subconsciously subjective. This collides with the goal of a scientific report namely to report objectively without bias.
To exclude such bias the proposed format aims at reporting complete results with only the required minimum of methodological data. With the open source format, the reader instead of the author draws conclusions based on his own experience, situation and knowledge. Great care is taken to ensure that the data is well defined, complete, raw and clearly exposed. This approach to publishing should allow inclusion of the reader as an active participant who critically considers the data and draws his own conclusions rather than, as usual, trying to defend his point of view against the author's bias. Thus, we expect a live confrontation where the reader tries to come to terms with his own problems in his own way.
In the present booklet, 7 authors were offered the opportunity to propose a theme that had to be well delimited by topic (type of injury, principles followed, technicalities, biology etc.), surgeons and time period. The condition was that a complete set of data was made available to be published in this book.
We were expecting resistance to such demanding and unusual approach to publishing. In fact, to our astonishment, all surgeons addressed were ready to cooperate in this undertaking of the AO Foundation. They delivered their reports in good time, covering a variety of topics and approaches. We asked a review board to comment whereby we are only including the general guidelines expressed by the board to improve the quality of the undertaking.
The present booklet is the first in a series. It opens up a new interaction between author and reader. Feedback from actively involved readers is highly welcome.
