Anne M. Gilroy, MA Anne M. Gilroy, MA

Anne M. Gilroy, MA, is an Assistant Professor of Surgery and Cell Biology at the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) in Worcester, Massachusetts. In this role, she is responsible for teaching first-year human gross anatomy and serves as the program coordinator for several clinical and developmental anatomy courses. Since joining UMMS in 1989, she has created a longitudinal program in clinical anatomy for medical students for their four years of medical education and has developed programs for several clinical specialties. She also teaches residents in plastic surgery, anesthesia, and obstetrics and gynecology at UMass Memorial Medical Center, the clinical partner of UMMS. Anne Gilroy has been recognized repeatedly for her commitment to medical education, being honored by her students with an outstanding medical educator award annually since 1994 and by her peers with the Educational Achievement Award in 2005.

Brian R. MacPherson, PhD Brian R. MacPherson, PhD

Brian R. MacPherson, PhD, is the Vice Chair and Holsinger Endowed Professor of Anatomy at the Chandler Medical Center, University of Kentucky College of Medicine, Lexington, Kentucky. He spent 15 years at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, teaching histology and gross anatomy to medical and dental students. In 1991 he accepted a Special Titles position in the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology in the University of Kentucky College of Medicine (UKCOM). In 2000 he was promoted to full professor and appointed Vice Chair with administrative responsibilities directed towards the teaching program of the department. He has been awarded the departmental Holsinger Teaching Award for 2004, 2005, 2006 and was also recognized as a UK Great Teacher for 2004. In 2006 he was awarded the UKCOM Honorary Alumnus.

Lawrence M. Ross M.D., Ph.D. Lawrence M. Ross, M.D., Ph.D.

Lawrence M. Ross, MD, PhD, is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy at the University of Texas Medical School, Houston. For 27 years, he was a faculty member in the Department of Anatomy at Michigan State University (MSU) in East Lansing, Michigan, where he taught gross anatomy, histology, and embryology. He was the course director of gross anatomy for 10 years and course director of histology for 8 years. He spent 5 years in curriculum administration and served on the State of Michigan's State Anatomical Board for 19 years. Dr. Ross has taught medical students, surgical residents, allied health professionals, and undergraduate students. He has been honored with teaching awards from the medical students at MSU and University of Texas Medical Branch. He is currently the president of the American Association of Clinical Anatomists.

Edward Lamperti PhD Edward Lamperti, Ph.D.

Edward Lamperti received his Ph.D., and critical parts of his education in anatomy, from the Department of Anatomy (now Cell Biology) at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, Ma. While participating in teaching in the gross anatomy course there, he received an award (by vote of the medical students) as "Best Medical Educator" in basic sciences. Subsequently he worked in the Neuroscience Division at Children’s Hospital, Boston, in the Neurology Department at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, and in the Biochemistry Department at Boston University Medical School. Currently Dr. Lamperti is investigating calcium signaling in immune and related cells at the CBR Institute for Biomedical Research, Harvard Medical School.

Michael Schuenke, M.D., Ph.D. Michael Schuenke, M.D., Ph.D.

Michael Schuenke earned an undergraduate degree and, in 1982, a doctorate in biology from the Zoological Institute in the Faculty for Mathematics and Natural Sciences, at the University of Kiel, Germany. Now a biologist, he was so fascinated by medicine that in 1983 he began to attend medical school. From 1983 to 1991 he worked on the scientific staff at the Institute of Anatomy at the University of Kiel. In 1989 he received his second doctorate, this time in medicine. He completed a postdoctorate in 1991 and became Associate Professor of Anatomy at Kiel. In 1992 he transferred to become Head Assistant at the Institute of Anatomy at the University of Luebeck and returned to Kiel in 1994 to become Director of the Institute of Anatomy.

Erik Schulte, M.D., Ph.D. Erik Schulte, M.D.

Erik Schulte studied medicine at the University of Freiburg and went on to become Associate Professor of Anatomy there in 1989. He later transferred to the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich. In 1992 he accepted a position as Professor of the Institute of Anatomy at the University of Mainz. Erik Schulte is a genuine teacher, listening to the feedback of his students, perferring to give lectures and seminars himself, and integrating new educational software and other media into his teaching. In 1996 Erik Schulte was awarded the prize for "Excellence in Education" by the Medical Faculty of the University of Mainz.

Udo Schumacher, M.D., Ph.D. Udo Schumacher, M.D., FRCPath, CBiol, FIBiol, DSc

Udo Schumacher studied medicine at the German National Merit Foundation in Kiel and spent a year doing research at the Wistar Institute of Anatomy and Biology in Philadelphia. After returning to Kiel in 1983, he wrote his thesis on serologic reactions of foreign proteins in mice. Fascinated by the anatomy of the human body he first worked in the Institute of Pathology at the University of Kiel, then transferred to the University of Munich to work in Anatomy. Starting in 1991 Udo Schumacher spent seven years at the University of Southampton. Afterwards he returned to Hamburg, where he is now the Director of the Institute of Anatomy II (experimental morphology).

Markus M. Voll Markus M. Voll

Markus Voll studied graphic design at the Blocherer School in Munich. His joy in pursuing his artistic career was complemented by his great interest in natural science, especially medicine and the human body. After his training, he created computer graphics for different specialty book publishers. In 1992 he was finally able to combine his artistic talent with his medical interests. He won a contract to create illustrations for Thieme and, being so fascinated by medicine, began medical training in Munich.

Karl H. Wesker Karl H. Wesker

Karl Wesker was trained as a printer and initially worked with acid etching and lithography. In 1972 he began studying visual communication in Muenster. After completing his studies there, he moved on to study Art Sciences at the Technical University in Berlin. The young graphic designer was interested in painting and free art as well as in learning about anatomical art. In 1980 Karl Wesker was offered a position as a freelance creator of scientific illustrations for the Steglitz Clinic. Since 1982 Karl Wesker has been busy in the visual arts sector in Berlin, with his artistic works regularly on display. He has been llustrating for fine arts publications and medical publishers for over 10 years.
