E9 is a six-volume set of ca. 4500 pages that evaluates the entire literature on six-membered and larger hetero-rings with maximum unsaturation. In each case, salts and mesoionic compounds are included provided they can be considered as hetarenes. Hydroxy-, sulfanyl- and amino-substituted hetarenes are also included, even though the tautomeric oxo, thioxo or imino form may prevail. The access to oxygen-, sulfur- or nitrogen-substituted derivatives is also covered briefly, if the method seems adaptable for the synthesis of the corresponding unsubstituted compounds. The high standard of quality of this set is the result of the efforts of the team of distinguished international chemists who have served as editors and authors.

As in all HOUBEN-WEYL volumes, the coverage of methods includes a critical evaluation in the text, clear visual representation in reaction schemes, the best experimental procedures and assessment of the reaction scope by the use of tables. This set of volumes is designed to be a standard reference work for chemists engaged in organic synthesis.
