Stuttgart – Dr. Margaret Faul, Executive Director Process Development, AMGEN Inc., and Professor Shu Kobayashi are soon to join the editorial board of Science of Synthesis (SOS), the comprehensive, full-text resource for methods in synthetic organic chemistry. Shu Kobayashi is a professor at the University of Tokyo and one of the leading experts on chemical catalysis. He will replace long-time Science of Synthesis editorial board member Professor Masakatsu Shibasaki. Margaret Faul will bring her expertise in chemical process development and research methods in biotechnology to the new task.

Science of Synthesis is used by chemical experts in industry, research, and education as both an interactive online platform offering full-text as well as structure searches and a printed work. The ten members of the editorial board work closely with Thieme’s team of editors to provide researchers with easily searchable and accessible information on methods and procedures for all relevant compound classes.

Dr. Margaret Faul joins the Science of Synthesis editorial board as an expert in Process Research and Development with ample experience in industrial biotech research. As Executive Director Process Development at AMGEN Inc., a position she took over in 2003, she is responsible for the commercial process development and process characterization of all molecules in both the synthetic and biologic Amgen portfolio. Dr. Faul, who earned her PhD specializing in organic synthetic chemistry at Harvard University, leverages her technical experience to support programs across all stages of development from preclinical to commercialization, investing significant effort in evolving a chemistry culture focused on the implementation of greener and more sustainable chemical processes. Dr. Faul is a member of the Board of Directors of the International Consortium for Innovation and Quality in the Pharmaceutical Industry and Chair of the Enabling Technologies Consortium.

“Dr. Faul stands for the mission of SOS to serve the academic and the industrial synthesis community alike. Her research-oriented approach allowed her and her team to find creative yet practical and economically viable solutions for many challenging synthetic problems in drug development. Her biotechnology expertise will be an extra asset for Science of Synthesis,” said Professor Dr. Alois Fürstner, Managing Director at the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung (Max-Planck-Institut for Coal Research), Mülheim on Ruhr, and editor-in-chief of Science of Synthesis.

Professor Shu Kobayashi shares Dr. Faul’s interest in environmental considerations and efficient organic syntheses. With his research group at the University of Tokyo, he has been developing reaction systems for which water is used as a substitute for harmful organic solvents. Professor Kobayashi has already contributed his valuable expertise as author and publisher of the Science of Synthesis volume “Water in Organic Synthesis”. In addition, he focuses on the development of polymer-immobilized metal catalysts that can be recovered and reused. His research has won him the Nagoya Silver Medal, the Prize of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, the Green Chemistry Minister of Education Award, and the Research Award of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Professor Kobayashi will take over on the Science of Synthesis editorial board from his former University of Tokyo colleague, Professor Masakatsu Shibasaki in January 2018.

“Professor Kobayashi is one the world’s leading researchers in the field of chemical catalysis. His novel research approach has led him to sometimes unorthodox, yet highly practical solutions to key problems in synthetic chemistry. We are excited to have him on board come next year,” said Professor Dr. Alois Fürstner.
