Cooperation brings together machine learning and expert human-curated data with unprecedented results in synthesis reaction planning

Stuttgart, Zurich – The cooperation between IBM Research Europe and Thieme Chemistry, which was announced this summer, builds on the synergies between high-quality data (Science of Synthesis and Synfacts by Thieme) and state-of-the-art machine learning models for organic chemistry synthesis predictions (RXN for Chemistry by IBM) to create an unprecedented user experience. RXN For Chemistry, the cloud platform using artificial intelligence (AI) has recently been trained with highest-quality, human-curated datasets from Thieme’s Science of Synthesis and Synfacts. IBM Research Europe and Thieme Chemistry now announce the first results of their cooperation, which were evaluated by seven eminent synthetic chemistry experts and their research groups from China, Germany, Switzerland, New Zealand, and the USA.

Stuttgart, Germany – This year’s Nobel Prize in Chemistry goes to Benjamin List, Germany, and David MacMillan, USA, for the development of asymmetric organocatalysis. In 2013, Benjamin List published a two-volume work on this topic with Thieme. As Editor-in-Chief of the journal SYNLETT of Thieme Chemistry, he has been largely responsible for its content since 2015. Furthermore, he has been an active member of the editorial board of the journal SYNFACTS since 2006. David MacMillan is the author of several chapters in Science of Synthesis, Thieme's digital reference work for organic synthetic chemistry. For SYNLETT, he authored the paper ”Strategies to Bypass the Taxol Problem.” In 2006, he received the Thieme IUPAC Prize.

Stuttgart, Germany – The RXN for Chemistry cloud platform helps synthetic organic chemists in predicting the outcome of chemical reactions using artificial intelligence (AI) which is trained on data. Thus, a prerequisite for optimal prediction results is high-quality datasets. The cooperation between IBM and Thieme Chemistry aims at improving the prediction outcomes using synthesis data from Thieme's expert curated digital publication source for organic chemistry - Science of Synthesis.

Stuttgart, Germany – Cristina Nevado, Professor at the University of Zurich (Switzerland), won the Dr. Margaret Faul Award for Women in Chemistry. An international selection committee recognized her for her successful and diverse research in the field of catalysis using late transition metals, synthesis of medicinally relevant natural products, and development of bioactive chemical probes. Thieme Chemistry and the editors of Science of Synthesis created the Dr. Margaret Faul Award for Women in Chemistry to honor female chemists who have made significant contributions to synthetic chemistry in the first 15 years of their independent careers. This is the prize’s second edition, after the first in 2019, with an award totaling €5,000. The award ceremony takes place next Monday, July 5, 2021, during the European Symposium on Organic Chemistry (ESOC 2021).

Stuttgart, February 2021 – Chemist Victor Snieckus passed away on December 18, 2020 at the age of 83. With him, Thieme Chemistry loses a pioneering scientist and visionary in his field. Among other achievements, Snieckus was co-founder and editorial board member of the journals SYNLETT and SYNFACTS – playing a major role in shaping these journals through his personal commitment. He was also a volume editor for the Science of Synthesis series covering two volumes on lithium chemistry. As a member of the jury for the Thieme–IUPAC Prize, he was committed to young researchers in the field of synthetic chemistry.

Stuttgart, January 2021 – The Thieme Group has concluded a transformation agreement with ZB MED – Information Centre for Life Sciences, the Forschungszentrum Jülich and eight other specialist libraries. As part of the current agreement, which comes into effect on 1 January 2021, authors of the participating institutions receive the opportunity to publish original papers in four international specialist Thieme journals on an open access basis without additional costs. The offer includes the publications International Journal of Sports Medicine, Pharmacopsychiatry, Thrombosis and Haemostasis and Methods of Information in Medicine. Thieme already reached a similar agreement in 2019. The pilot project was initially restricted to the specialist journal Hormone and Metabolic Research.
