Stuttgart, Germany – Cristina Nevado, Professor at the University of Zurich (Switzerland), won the Dr. Margaret Faul Award for Women in Chemistry. An international selection committee recognized her for her successful and diverse research in the field of catalysis using late transition metals, synthesis of medicinally relevant natural products, and development of bioactive chemical probes. Thieme Chemistry and the editors of Science of Synthesis created the Dr. Margaret Faul Award for Women in Chemistry to honor female chemists who have made significant contributions to synthetic chemistry in the first 15 years of their independent careers. This is the prize’s second edition, after the first in 2019, with an award totaling €5,000. The award ceremony takes place next Monday, July 5, 2021, during the European Symposium on Organic Chemistry (ESOC 2021).

Cristina Nevado is considered to be a distinguished scientist in the field of synthetic organic chemistry. She works with her research group using an interdisciplinary approach based on three different pillars at the University of Zurich (Switzerland). One focus of her work is on developing new and highly selective synthesis methods based on late-transition metal catalysis, and secondly, implementing these methods to streamline the synthesis of complex natural products. She is also interested in medicinal chemistry, studying questions such as how new active substances can be more rationally designed, presented, and their mode of action investigated.

"We received a great deal of outstanding submissions in response to the second call for nominations and Professor Cristina Nevado ultimately rose to the top of the pack. At the University of Zurich, she has developed a superb research program advancing new and innovative methods in the field of synthetic chemistry. She is an excellent scientist and is therefore a great role model for young female and male chemists alike,” said the co-chairs of the selection committee, Dr. Margaret Faul and Professor Alois Fürstner, about the awarding of the Dr. Margaret Faul Women in Chemistry Award 2021.

About Cristina Nevado
Cristina Nevado got her PhD from the Autónoma University of Madrid in October 2004, where she worked on catalysis using gold and platinum under the direction of Professor Antonio Echavarren. After doing her postdoc at the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung in the German city of Mülheim an der Ruhr, she took up a position as an Assistant Professor at the University of Zurich in 2007. She then received a Thieme Chemistry Journals Award in 2011. She became a Full Professor at the University of Zurich in 2013.

About the Dr. Margaret Faul Award for Women in Chemistry
The Dr. Margaret Faul Award for Women in Chemistry is presented every two years by Thieme Chemistry and the Editors of Science of Synthesis to female scientists within the first 15 years of their independent career who made a significant contribution to synthetic chemistry. The award includes 5,000 Euro prize money intended to support the winner’s professional career. In addition to organic chemistry, the scope of research considered by the award committee includes organometallic chemistry, medicinal and biological chemistry, molecular design, and materials chemistry. Award co-founder and Science of Synthesis editorial board member Dr. Margaret Faul lends her name to the award.
