New York/Stuttgart - Thieme Publishers is pleased to once again showcase the stunning medical illustrations of Karl Wesker and Markus Voll in the new publication, Atlas of Anatomy. Wesker and Voll are credited with enriching the atlas with more than 2,000 full-color illustrations that depict complex concepts with exquisite detail.

Karl Wesker, a freelance artist and graphic designer based in Berlin, studied visual communication and art sciences. Along with Markus Voll, a science illustrator and graphic designer based in Munich, both artists have been producing high-quality anatomical drawings for Thieme for more than a decade now.

Asked about the process of being an artist in the twenty-first century, Wesker explains, "In terms of medical illustrations, I see no limitations, but rather, a wide range of possibilities with unplumbed depths. The computer with its programs is, in this case, an implement, like a paint brush and watercolors. Every tool enables extensive and precise contact with the object and shapes the aesthetic expression as well."

Wesker goes on to explain the technique used in Atlas of Anatomy. "We take the path of understanding from inner to outer, layer by layer. And you also find this method in the book. Our approach to knowledge is reflected in the sequence of the illustrations. We start with the bones and the higher structures resting upon them." After the bones were created, the artists then moved to even more complex structures, such as muscles and tissues.

Anne M. Gilroy, who teaches at the University of Massachusetts and is one of the three American anatomists that worked on Atlas of Anatomy says, "When I first saw these illustrations, I thought, they are beautiful, they are life-like, they are useful for the students. I think this atlas with these striking illustrations will be something that students will enjoy using just simply because of the beauty, not to mention because of the content of the book."

Atlas of Anatomy is arranged in a unique two-page spread format, with each spread acting as a self-contained lesson. Additional highlights include clinical correlates and images, such as radiographs, MRIs, CT scans, and endoscopic views. The book is part of the Thieme Anatomy program, which includes a free interactive anatomy website (www.winkingskull.com) as well as flashcards.

Groundbreaking and expertly structured, this new atlas provides readers with an accurate, three-dimensional understanding of the material. Based on Thieme
