New York/Stuttgart – Thieme is proud to announce that Mohammed Naqvi, a third year medical student at Andrew Taylor Still University (ATSU) – School of Osteopathic Medicine, in Mesa, Arizona, USA, has been awarded the 2011 Humanism in Medicine Scholarship from the Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA). Thieme Publishers has sponsored this Scholarship for 2011 and 2012. Through an affiliate agreement with SOMA, Thieme regularly provides valuable academic resources to incoming SOMA members.
This scholarship was created to honor the eight SOMA members who perished in October, 2004 during a flight to Kirksville, Missouri to explore ways of creating a “compassionate campus” at the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. Applicants were judged on how well their character demonstrates the philsophy of osteopathic medicine, unconditional love for their community and peers, and leadership and dedication. Mohammed Naqvi, a medical student who is the founder of his university’s Big Doc-Lil Doc Mentorship Program and who has participated in volunteer activities that include work at a health hospice and University of Arizona KidCats Tutoring Center, perfectly exemplifies these qualities. Mohammed is not only determined to become a doctor who treats patients in a humanistic manner, but also to mentor other medical students to do the same. Thieme fully supports these values and passionately strives to encourage excellence in the medical community.
