MRI is the imaging modality of choice for spine surgeons, and a majority of them prefer to review images on their own in addition to a radiologist’s report. However, few spine surgeons receive formal training on how to evaluate MRIs.

Thieme Publishing Group and the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) have awarded the 2014 Thieme-IUPAC prize to Professor Martin D. Burke. The chemist from the University of Illinois will receive this distinction for his research, which centers on the study and synthesis of small molecules that can perform protein-like functions and may ultimately serve as substitutes for missing or dysfunctional proteins that underlie human diseases.

Medical professionals around the globe should be able to base their work on the latest scientific insights – from the medical student in Angola, to the physician in Haiti and the nurse in Yemen. The Research4Life program offers medical professionals in the least developed countries free access to current scientific literature. As of June 2014, Thieme Medical Publishers will become the publisher of the Journal of Brachial Plexus and Peripheral Nerve Injury (JBPPNI). Like many medical specialties, spine surgery is constantly evolving -- advances are made every 5 years and the field changes significantly every 10 years. Significant investments in research and development for spine surgery have resulted in new surgical techniques supported by new technologies and devices. In this ever-evolving field, few publications explain the exact steps for performing specific procedures so that both the surgeon- in-training can learn and the seasoned spine surgeon can refresh prior to a surgical procedure. There is a great need for a didactic text to clearly explain the steps of the main procedures in modern spine surgery.
