Stuttgart, October 2019 – Thieme is expanding the specialist journal The Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeon by adding the new Open Access offering Pediatric and Congenital Cardiology. All contributions to the new supplement are freely accessible online. Journal and supplement together form the joint organ of the German Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (DGTHG) and the German Society for Pediatric Cardiology and Congenital Heart Disease (DGPK). The Open Access Supplement provides the DGPK with a subject-specific publication platform. With this new model, Thieme for the first time integrates an extensive Open Access offering directly into an established subscription journal.
Pediatric cardiologists and cardiac surgeons work closely together in the clinical care of young patients with congenital heart defects. Together, they form an interdisciplinary "heart team". For years, this connection has been reflected in the close cooperation between the two specialist societies. With the expansion of the journal The Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeon into a joint publication organ, this relationship is further strengthened. "The newly created, integrated publication platform for the DGPK emphasizes the self-evident nature with which the two specialist societies of cardiac surgery and pediatric cardiology have been interacting for years," explains Professor Sven Dittrich, President of the DGPK, who from now on will also act as editor of the supplement.
With this direct integration of an Open Access offering into a subscription magazine, both specialist societies and the publisher are jointly breaking new ground. "Following routine formal reviews by the editorial staff and the editor-in-chief, all manuscripts dealing with pediatric cardiology, that were submitted either to the journal or the supplement, will follow a separate peer review path. The peer review of these articles is organized and conducted entirely by the DGPK and independently of the DGTHG," explains Graham Brumfield, Associate Publisher at Thieme. If a contribution has successfully passed the peer review process, the authors will be offered an Open Access publication in the supplement Pediatric and Congenital Cardiology for a publication charge.
"All readers - both cardiac surgeons and pediatric cardiologists - will benefit from the expanded interdisciplinary information offering," says Prof. Dr. Markus Heinemann, member of the board of DGTHG and editor-in-chief of The Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeon. "In view of the fact that both fields already work this well together in practice, it can be anticipated that this new joint venture is on the road to success as well."
Members of the DGPK receive a discount on the publication charge in the supplement Pediatric and Congenital Cardiology. They can also subscribe to the full edition of The Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeon at a reduced price. All other subscribers to The Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeon receive the supplement at no extra charge.
