New York/Stuttgart - Tom Brady, quarterback for the New England Patriots, is expected to miss the remainder of the 2008 football season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, musculoskeletal problems are among the top reasons for physician visits. This includes symptoms ranging from minor aches and pains to sports injuries like the one that recently put Brady out of commission. Surgical Treatment of Orthopaedic Trauma, published by Thieme, is a bestselling reference that concentrates on providing comprehensive, detailed information for surgeons on the management of these problems. The book comes with four DVDs that include video footage demonstrating ACL reconstruction.

Edited by Dr. James P. Stannard, from the University of Alabama; Dr. Andrew H. Schmidt, from the University of Minnesota; and Dr. Philip J. Kregor, from Vanderbilt University, the book was recently honored with a first place prize from the British Medical Association. Earlier this year, the book received the Professional Scholarly Publishing Award for Excellence in the Clinical Medicine category.

Surgical Treatment of Orthopaedic Trauma contains current information on surgical treatments for a broad range of injuries including spinal trauma and knee dislocation. The multi-media reference tool includes more than 18 hours of compelling video footage and assists orthopaedic surgeons in making the best choices when it comes to quality patient care.

Thieme recently gave a sizable donation to the Surgical Implant Generation Network (SIGN), in the form of this award-winning surgical reference, to assist the humanitarian organization in their charitable work. The Washington based non-profit organization provides medical professionals in developing countries with access to modern equipment and up-to-date training. The books and DVDs are currently being used in Afghanistan, Burma, and Papua New Guinea.
