New York/Stuttgart - Professor Markus K. Heinemann, the recently appointed Editor-in-Chief of the Thieme journal The Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeon, is the fifth editor to lead this periodical. His predecessor, Professor Wolf-Peter Kloevekorn, who passed away earlier this year, served as the Editor-in-Chief for 15 years – the longest anyone has held the position.

This change in editors, accompanied by a transformed editorial board, and an updated editorial structure, indicates a new phase for this journal. As the scientific organ of the German Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, these developments usher in an exciting era for members and readers alike.

Professor Heinemann has an extensive background in research and clinical practice, and currently serves as senior staff surgeon at the University of Mainz in Germany. He had his basic training at Hannover Medical School, helping to organize the aortic program. As a Research Fellow in the Boston Children's Hospital at Harvard Medical School, his studies focused on fetal cardiovascular physiology. During his time at Tuebingen University, he continued his academic work in congenital heart disease.

In the current dynamic phase, the Society, whose executive board members serve as associate editors of the journal, has been instrumental in the selection of an internationally diverse editorial board. "The choice of board members will hopefully inspire potential authors to consider submitting a treasured piece to a highly motivated new panel," says Professor Heinemann.

According to Professor Beyersdorf, president of the Society, "each of the 17 members represents a particular field of interest due to the growing sub-specialization of cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgery. It seemed prudent to have as many aspects as possible covered by experts." The new function of the editorial board is also to provide expert commentary on original research articles to stimulate discussion between readers and editors.

Thieme holds Professor Kloevekorn’s memory in highest esteem, as he helped to establish the journal as an internationally-accepted scientific publication. Professor Heinemann is dedicated to following in his predecessor’s footsteps by continuing the successful development of this seminal journal.
