New York/Stuttgart – Thieme, a world leader in scientific, medical, and academic publishing, won First Prize in the Radiology category and Highly Commended in the Internal Medicine and Surgical Specialties categories at the 2012 British Medical Association’s Medical Book Awards ceremony recently held in London. Through this competition the BMA aims to foster and reward excellence in medical publishing.
First prize in the Radiology category went to “Teaching Atlas of Mammography, Fourth Edition,” by László Tabár and Peter B. Dean. Rather than starting with the diagnosis and demonstrating typical findings, the approach of this atlas is to teach the reader how to analyze the image and reach the correct diagnosis through proper evaluation of the mammographic signs. It contains revised and expanded case studies that provide instructive long-term follow-up of patients over a period of up to 25 years.
"Endoscopic Ultrasound, Second Edition," by Christoph Frank Dietrich, won Highly Commended in the Internal Medicine category. This combined textbook and atlas contains chapters on contrast-enhanced EUS techniques, SonoElastography, and Hot Spots of Interventional EUS and Portal Hypertension and includes precise clinical descriptions and valuable tips and techniques for diagnosis and treatment. An accompanying DVD contains over 60 video sequences and 30 still images on selected topics from the book.
The following titles won Highly Commended in the Surgical Specialties category:
“Handbook of Spine Surgery,” by Ali A. Baaj, Praveen V. Mummaneni, Juan S. Uribe, Alexander R. Vaccaro, and Mark S. Greenberg. Authoritative, concise, and portable, this handbook is designed for use in a fast-paced clinical setting. Its coverage of both principles and techniques of contemporary spine surgery, including anatomy, pathology, procedures, and instrumentation, makes it highly useful as a refresher before surgery, an easily digestible study guide, or a daily companion for physicians caring for patients with spinal disorders.
“Salivary Gland Disorders and Diseases: Diagnosis and Management,” by Patrick J. Bradley and Orlando Guntinas-Lichius. From new findings at the molecular level, to diagnostic advances in cytopathology, histopathology, biochemistry, and imaging studies, this book covers every diagnostic and therapeutic development and innovation in the field. Its clear, concise, and heavily illustrated approach makes it ideal for use by both beginners and more experienced surgeons and physicians.
