Why use the NANDA-I Nursing Diagnoses, Definitions and Classification?

NANDA-I is the authoritative system for nursing diagnosis. Established in 1973, it is evidence based and rigorously, regularly, and thoroughly updated by a team of international nurse experts.

In this 2021–2023 version, the Twelfth Edition, the taxonomy provides 290 diagnoses, with the addition of 46 new diagnoses and 67 revised diagnoses. Each nursing diagnosis has been the product of one or more of our many NANDA-I volunteers, and most have a defined evidence base. Each new diagnosis has been debated and refined by our Diagnosis Development Committee (DDC) members, before finally being submitted to NANDA-I members for a vote of approval. Membership approval does not mean the diagnosis is “completed” or “ready to be used” across all countries or practice areas. We all know that practice and regulation of nursing varies from country to country. It is our hope that publication of these new diagnoses will facilitate further validation studies in different parts of the world, to achieve a higher level of evidence.

The diagnoses contained in NANDA International Nursing Diagnoses: Definitions and Classification, 2021-2023, Twelfth Edition, are to nursing what ICD is to physicians and DSM is to mental health professionals. EHR programs populated with NANDA-I support healthcare organizations by gathering data and by allowing nurses to attain excellence in assessment and, through that excellence, to prevent money-costing incidents.
Digital licenses to the NANDA-I diagnostic system encourage conversation and progress in nursing by implementing standardized terminology. Along with use of the full set diagnoses, digital licenses include the terms in .xml, .txt, or relational database format.
