New York/Stuttgart –STM, the global trade association for academic and publishers, has developed sharing principles that serve as a guideline for academic, technical, and medical publishers worldwide. Thieme, too, belongs to the signees of these voluntary principles for sharing scholarly articles in academic networks.
Scientific progress thrives on exchange and sharing. Approaches and solutions, study results and their interpretation, insights and experiences need to be shared, taken up and evolved. Academic contributions by scientists and researchers, made available by scholarly publishers around the world, play a key role in this. The sharing principles were designed to ensure the smooth flow of information between scientists and researchers while protecting the rights of copyright owners and publishers.
Thieme is committed to the values represented by the sharing principles. It is our goal to make medical information accessible in the best possible way, to disseminate it and raise the scientific community’s awareness for it. As a publishing corporation, we represent the claims of copyright owners and authors and protect their contributions against unauthorized use.
For our authors this means that their contributions made in the context of non-commercial research projects may be made available to involved scientists and researchers as part of a mutual knowledge exchange. Articles may be shared and distributed readily within research groups working on a specific project. Clearly defined standards allow the publisher to determine how often and in which form an article was used and distributed under the sharing principles. This gives Thieme a chance to measure and understand how articles and content are used within the scientific community and to continue to optimize its service. Thieme guarantees to protect the users’ privacy and data security in the processing of usage data. The publisher also supports the dissemination of metadata and open access articles through the relevant academic networks, thus helping to increase the visibility and reach of each academic article.
