New York/Stuttgart – The progressive refinement of endovascular techniques, the introduction of newer devices, such as stents, and recent study results suggesting that patients with intracranial aneurysms fared better with endovascular treatment have all contributed to the decline in open microsurgical clipping of aneurysms. As a result, younger neurosurgeons and neurosurgical residents are being exposed to fewer traditional aneurysm clippings  - in many residency training programs, the average chief resident may go an entire year without participating in the clipping of a complex aneurysm.

“Video Atlas of Intracranial Aneurysm Surgery,” recently published by Thieme, brings the spectrum of microsurgical procedures for intracranial aneurysms to residents, fellows, and younger neurosurgeons in an increasingly endovascular-focused field. It is a content-rich yet condensed reference that focuses on how to safely perform the full range of surgical procedures for intracranial aneurysms.

The author, Dr. Eric Nussbaum, explains that "Over the past two decades, dramatic advances in endovascular therapy have redefined the management of intracranial aneurysms. Nevertheless, there are many aneurysms that are better suited to open microsurgical techniques.  As a result, it is essential that neurosurgeons both today and in the future be trained adequately to perform open microsurgery in the treatment of intracranial aneurysms. "

Concise, high-quality videos are carefully woven throughout the atlas text, bringing to life the tips and techniques described in the book. This atlas is informed with the experience of Dr. Eric Nussbaum, a seasoned neurosurgeon who has performed over 2,000 aneurysm surgeries.
