In 1886, Georg Thieme founded a publishing house under his name, which passed into the ownership of the Hauff family in 1925. Four generations on, the Thieme Group is now managed by Dr. h.c. Albrecht Hauff together with Katrin Siems, and Martin Spencker. The Management Board is mainly focused on the strategic development and general management of Thieme, with a special emphasis on driving forward the digital transformation within the globally active company. The business leaders with an entrepreneurial mindset are responsible for the operational business.
Dr. h.c. Albrecht Hauff
Dr. Albrecht Hauff (*1954) holds a degree in business administration and has been a personally liable partner of the Thieme Group since 1990. He joined the family business in 1982 and has since overseen the further development of the Thieme Group into a digital healthcare service provider.
In 2006, the Medical Faculty of the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen awarded him an honorary doctorate for his services in mediating between medicine and science. The entrepreneur was also active on the university council for many years.
Dr. Hauff is also involved in numerous committees in the media industry and in public administration, serving for many years as a board member on the publishing committee of Börsenverein für den Deutschen Buchhandel (German Publishers and Booksellers Association) and on the board of Deutsche Fachpresse (German Trade Press). He also served on the Executive Board and other committees of the International Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishers (stm). Dr. Hauff supports the German Air Rescue (DRF) as a member of the association's advisory board as well as its foundation board.
He is an avid collector of modern, contemporary art and a member of the board of the Friends of the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, promoting the museum and its internationally renowned collection. He was also a member of the board of the Friends of the Literaturhaus Stuttgart e. V. for many years.
Katrin Siems
Katrin Siems (*1980) is a member of the Thieme Management Board and responsible for Marketing and Sales.
After completing an apprenticeship in publishing and studies in foreign trade and international management, she joined Springer Nature, where she managed the market launch and sale of electronic products. She then worked for the Berlin-based scientific publisher De Gruyter as Director of Business Development. After only one year at De Gruyter, she became Vice President Sales & Marketing and a member of the Executive Board and was responsible for the Sales, Marketing, Customer Service, and Rights and Licenses departments.
In 2013, Siems moved to Beuth Verlag, where she was responsible for marketing, sales, customer service, and CRM. She has been a member of the Thieme Management Board since 2017, coordinating all marketing and sales activities for the Thieme Group. With her extensive expertise in transforming analog products into digital solutions and marketing them, she plays a key role in positioning existing Thieme products and future innovations on the market and toward the target groups.
Martin Spencker
Martin Spencker (*1964) is responsible for Products & Solutions on the Management Board.
After apprenticing at Thieme and studying philosophy at the SJ School of Philosophy in Munich, Spencker gained experience at various national and international publishing houses before returning to Thieme in 1993. He became head of Thieme’s educational publishing unit at the time in 1999. In 2019, he was given responsibility for the entire Thieme International Business as Executive Vice President.
Martin Spencker has been a member of the Thieme Management Board since April 2022, where he is responsible for Products & Solutions. In this role, his task is to drive innovation and strengthen growth and professionalization in the three business units Science, Learning & Knowledge and Healthcare Data & Process Management.
Elmar Weber
Technology Architect, Team Supporter, Future Shaper
As Chief Technology Officer, Elmar Weber oversees the technological development and digital transformation of the Thieme Group. A member of the management board since February 2025, he heads IT and the eProduct Governance and Solutions division. He began developing software at a young age and later studied computer science in Paderborn.
After spending several years as a freelance developer and consultant for clients such as SAP, HolidayCheck, and Heidelberger Druckmaschinen, he founded a start-up in 2013 and successfully established it. In 2018, he became the CTO of the medtech startup Amboss. He led Amboss into a new phase of growth, expanding its product organization to 150 employees.
Most recently, he served as interim CTO at Morressier, where he promoted the use of AI in scientific publishing. He focuses on using technology as a strategic tool to create sustainable solutions and establish structures that enable product teams to work in an agile, independent, and innovative manner.
