The Thieme Talk is an event format of the Thieme Group for a comprehensive exchange on relevant cross-sectional topics in medicine and healthcare.
We offer an independent and interdisciplinary discussion platform for representatives from science, health care, politics and the media. The topics are deliberately chosen broadly and are discussed on a meta-level. The event format also enables an informal and intensive exchange of ideas between speakers and guests beyond the subject matter.
Shortage of specialists, understaffing, chronic overwork: how can patient care be secured in the future?
The shortage of specialists is one of the biggest challenges our healthcare system is facing. Treatments already have to be canceled today due to a lack of staff. Many employees feel overworked and quite a few are considering leaving the profession. Added to this are the effects of demographic change: many working people will retire in the next few years. At the same time, the number of older people requiring adequate medical care is constantly increasing. How can our healthcare system meet these challenges? What contribution can migration or the use of artificial intelligence, for example, make to counteracting the shortage of specialists? How can supply bottlenecks be avoided? These questions were discussed intensively at the China Club in Berlin on October 26, 2023.

Shortage of skilled workers, climate change, supply bottlenecks, demographic change: What do we need to prepare for?
Our healthcare system is facing major challenges: The effects of the pandemic and climate change, the increasing shortage of specialists and the associated supply bottlenecks, an aging population and sluggish digitization. In order not to walk blindly into the next crisis, we must all play a part in preparing our healthcare system for it. But how can this be done? What is needed to ensure that patients can continue to receive good care in the future? This was the topic of discussion at the Humbold Carré in Berlin on October 19, 2022.
