Peer Review Reimagined

This innovative and interactive method offers secure, fast, and substantive reviewing in today’s fast-moving scientific world.

The Select Crowd Review process is a modern and collaborative way to improve the quality and speed of publishing. It was first introduced for Thieme's chemical synthesis journal SYNLETT in 2017 and allows editors an evaluation of a manuscript within a very short time. It has also been available for other journals like- SynOpen, Synthesis, Sustainability & Circularity NOW, International Journal of Sports Medicine, RöFo, The Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeon, Therapeutics NOW and Planta Medica.

By combining expert evaluation in a collaborative review environment, Select Crowd Review makes the review process much faster than classical peer review, and still with the same or even better quality.

How it works

A pre-selected group of experts who are exclusive members of the crowd, receives a link to the manuscript and can comment on it anonymously via a secure platform. Only the editor knows the identities of the reviewers while monitoring the review process.

Each reviewer decides whether they have the time and expertise to comment on the manuscript. Participating reviewers can view each other's comments and discuss the research presented in the paper to further improve the manuscript. They can respond to comments, interact with other reviewers, and contribute in parallel throughout the review period.

At the end of the review period, the manuscript is taken off the platform. In the next step, the editor evaluates the comments of the reviewers, decides about accepting (with or without revision) or rejecting the article and sends the feedback of the crowd to the author for consideration and implementation.

Please note that both the size of the crowd and the duration of the review period are flexible and determined at the discretion of the editor.

What it offers

Since the introduction of Select Crowd Review for SYNLETT, experience has proved that this innovative review process is faster, reduces bias in peer review process, and enhances collaboration among experts compared to traditional peer review.

We will continue to improve Select Crowd Review together with editors, authors, and reviewers that the innovative process will not just benefit Thieme journals, but potentially the wider scientific community.
