Martin Spencker Assumes Responsibility for the International Activities of Thieme

Created: 14 June 2019

Stuttgart – As of July 1, 2019 Martin Spencker (54) will be the Executive Vice President International Business of the Thieme Group. He will then be responsible for all the market offerings of Thieme outside the German-speaking countries. Moreover, the various international Thieme locations will be run by country managers in future. These changes are associated with the forthcoming retirement of Brian D. Scanlan, the current President of Thieme Publishers, New York.

The Thieme Group operates on a global scale as a supplier of information and services for target groups in the fields of medicine, chemistry and science. With subsidiaries in New York, Delhi, Rio and Beijing, as well as with digital offerings and Open Access publications, the Thieme Group has continuously expanded its international presence in the last few decades.

Brian D. Scanlan, President of Thieme Publishers since 1995, will retire at the end of 2019. This prompted the Thieme management to restructure its international activities: As a result, Martin Spencker in his function as Executive Vice President International Business will from now on coordinate all the international market offerings of the Thieme Group at their headquarters. The individual locations themselves will be run by Managing Directors: From July 1 onwards, Dr. Cathrin Weinstein will take over this task for Thieme USA, and Louisa Turrell will do so for Thieme Brazil. Ajit Kohli will continue to perform this function for Thieme India, as will Dr. Daniel Schiff for Thieme China. Within the management of Thieme the international activities are assigned to Dr. Udo Schiller, who is responsible for products & solutions worldwide.

Martin Spencker has been working for Thieme since 1993: At first he was responsible for the marketing activities of Thieme’s subsidiary Enke, then he became head of the division responsible for the educational products of the Georg Thieme publishing house. His particular focus in the last few years has been on the opportunities of digital publishing, and he was heavily involved in the establishment of learning platforms such as Via Medici and CNE (Certified Nursing Education). Spencker gained international experience with MacMillan Professional Books and Oxford University Press in New York and also in connection with the international marketing of Thieme’s Anatomy Atlas PROMETHEUS. “In view of his international background, but mainly due to his experience with digital business models and the transformation of processes, offers and services into digital services, Martin Spencker is the best qualified person for this new task” stated Dr. h.c. Albrecht Hauff, Chief Executive Officer of the Thieme Group, as the reason for the decision.

Brian D. Scanlan will continue working for Thieme until the end of the year. In the last few years, he made a substantial contribution to the further expansion of the international activities of the Thieme Group. During this time new markets have been opened up, digital platforms such as MedOne have been launched, and the journal program has been expanded with Open Access. Now Spencker is going to continue to advance the digital expansion as his main objective. In doing so he plans to bring the network of global players, processes, systems and offerings within the Group closer together. Spencker emphasizes: “I can rely on an outstanding team worldwide, with which we can make use of the special opportunities on the international markets for Thieme”.
