Professor Thierry Ollevier is the new Editor-in-Chief for the Thieme Chemistry journal SynOpen

Stuttgart, June 2023 – Thieme is delighted to appoint Professor Thierry Ollevier of Université Laval, Québec, Canada, as the new Editor-in-Chief of the SynOpen Editorial Board. SynOpen – Thieme’s high-quality open access journal – offers fast, flexible, and fair services to its authors, using unique crowd sourcing peer review.

Launched in 2017 under the leadership of Professor Laurence Harwood (University of Reading, UK), SynOpen is an international journal that publishes high-quality articles on chemical synthesis, including synthesis, catalysis, organometallic-, medicinal-, biological- and photochemistry, as well as related disciplines. Professor Thierry Ollevier, who has served as a member of the SynOpen Advisory Board since 2019, plans to establish his own vision for the success of the journal: “I am looking forward to working with an internationally diverse team of Associate Editors, publishing editors, the supporting team at Thieme and of course the authors and referees. I will continue the further growth and developments that have already been started at Thieme,” says Thierry Ollevier.

Thierry Ollevier obtained his Licence and Ph.D. in organic chemistry at the Université of Namur (Belgium). He was post doctorate fellow at the Université catholique de Louvain (Belgium) under István E. Markó, NATO post doctorate fellow at Stanford University under Barry M. Trost and then post doctorate fellow at the Université de Montréal under André B. Charette. After an Assistant Professor appointment at Université Laval (Québec, Canada), Thierry Ollevier first became Associate Professor in 2006 and is currently Full Professor. In 2016 he was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Current research in his group aims at designing novel catalysts, developing catalytic reactions and applying these methods to chemical synthesis. He is active in the areas of diazo and diazirine chemistry, iron catalysis, asymmetric catalysis, and synthetic green chemistry.

“We are excited that Professor Thierry Ollevier has accepted the invitation to take on this leading role for SynOpen. And it will be our pleasure to work with him to further develop our open access journal at Thieme.” says Kathleen Too, Senior Vice President Thieme Chemistry. “We would also like to thank Professor Laurence Harwood and his team for their editorial services on SynOpen”.

SynOpen will further grow via the organization of special issues focusing on cutting-edge topics that will be steered by the board members together with guest editors. SynOpen also offers new article types, such as Spotlight articles and Graphical Reviews, aiming at providing a quick snapshot review of the latest trends in a hot area using only chemical schemes.
