Thieme is shining a spotlight on female authors in medicine

“It starts with women as leaders, with equal representation and decision-making power… Gender equality and women’s rights are essential to […] building a better future for everyone.”
 - United National Secretary-General António Guterres

At Thieme, we couldn’t agree more. We believe women in medicine are crucial to building a better future for everyone. Female leadership in global health not only promotes women’s health but the well-being and health of all.

More women than ever before are choosing to pursue careers in both medicine and medical research; however, a gender gap still exists. According to the UN women make up 70% of health and social care workers, but only 37% of first authors on medical research articles. At Thieme, we believe the key to closing the gender gap in medicine is to uplift women’s voices. We are proud to publish the research of women in medicine across the globe. In order to uplift and amplify these voices, we have created Thieme’s Women In Medicine collection, which aims to highlight and celebrate the work and contributions to medicine by female-identifying people from around the world. We are tremendously proud of these contributions and would like to facilitate further dissemination of their content to level the playing field by providing free access to select articles and content.

Thieme encourages its authors, readers, editors, and employees to support our shared goal of gender equality. As a global publisher with the privilege of publishing the works of authors from all corners of the planet, we strongly support the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), in particular SDG 5 (achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls) and SDG 3 (ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages).
