Outline CME article (english)

Content and Structure of CME Articles

A CME article is structured according to certain criteria. We have listed and explained the individual components below (in more detail than in the checklist). If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

Before you start...

Please note that we only accept articles that have not yet been published or submitted elsewhere. If the content of the work has already been presented orally at a conference, you should note this, indicating the type, location and time of the conference. Plagiarism checks are carried out on an ongoing basis.

Please note: Alienation of personal data

Real people (e.g. patients) have the right not to be shown in any recognizable way in the article, unless they have specifically consented in writing to such a representation of their person. Therefore, submitted texts and all associated manuscript components must always be free of third-party personal data. Please read our guidelines on the alienation of personal names and data. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your contact person at the publisher.

Total scope of your article (all components of the article such as figures, text, etc.)

The total scope of your article is either 36,000 or 58,000 characters including spaces (depending on the journal) and will be communicated to you by your contact at the publisher. Please note: The bibliography and figures are included in the total length. One figure corresponds to approx. 1,000 characters including spaces.

Title of your article

The title serves to clearly identify the topic covered in the text. The length of the title should be a maximum of 80 characters including spaces.

Authors

Ideally, 1 to a maximum of 3 authors are involved per article. Regarding authorship, we follow the recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors; they state that all of the following 4 points must be met in order to justify being named as an author: (1) substantial contribution to the conception/design of the work or collection, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work, (2) elaboration of the work/critical revision of important intellectual content, (3) final approval of the version to be published, and (4) agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work.

Corresponding authors

The corresponding author is responsible for all communication with his/her contact at Thieme. He/she is responsible for the manuscript from submission to publication, i.e. during submission, peer review and production processes. Furthermore, he/she is also responsible for ensuring that the other named authors agree to publication in the submitted version and that the version he/she has approved for printing is correct. After publication, the corresponding author will receive a PDF offprint for private use.

Short author biographies

The length of your short CV should be a maximum of 450 characters including spaces (per author), as illustrated in the following example:         Prof. Dr. Max Mustermann, born in 1965. 1984-1992 medical study at the LMU Munich. 1992-2001 residency in internal medicine. 2001 consultant in internal medicine. 2004 specialist in internal intensive care medicine. Since 2/2013 head of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University Hospital Musterdorf. Main areas of focus: cardiological intensive care medicine, management of arrhythmias.

Introduction

The short introduction shows the relevance of the topic and is intended to make the reader want to read more. The length of the introductory text should be a maximum of 450 characters including spaces.

Main text

Structure your main text with subheadings (no more than 3 sublevels). The recommended length of individual text sections is 800 to 1,400 characters including spaces.

Conclusion

The short conclusion summarizes the most important points of the article. The length of the final text should be max. 400 characters including spaces.

Core statements

List 5 to 10 core statements at the end of your article. Core statements contain the most important statements of the article and their total length should be max. 1,800 characters including spaces.

CME questions

For the certification of your CME article, 10 CME questions are required. The questions should relate to the specific content of your article, promote understanding of the topic and reflect the main learning objectives of your article. Please formulate your questions briefly and precisely and specify exactly 5 possible answers (only one answer is correct). Maximum 5 non-questions are possible. Please mark the correct answer in the manuscript by bold / colored highlighting.

Case study boxes

Please integrate into your text a case study (which runs throughout) or 3 to 5 independent case excerpts. The length of each case should be max. 1500 characters incl. spaces. Up to 3 (small) illustrations are possible per box. All casuistic boxes are automatically given the box title "case example" in the layout. You are welcome to add a short title (e.g. "blood sample", "diagnosis").

Tables and lists

Tables have at least two columns and a header. Please create your tables in Word and formulate a table header for each table (e.g. “Tab. 1: Differential diagnoses of acute chest pain”). Please note: single-column lists or enumerations are not considered tables. Tables have at least two columns and a header row. Please create your tables in Word and formulate a table header for each table (e.g. “Tab. 1: Differential diagnoses of acute chest pain”).

Facts / information boxes

As required, bundle selected facts into text boxes such as “practical tip”, “case study”, “background knowledge” etc. The text in the box can be broken down and contain 1 to 3 subheadings (max. 30 characters including spaces). The continuous text per text box should be a maximum of 500-1,000 characters including spaces. Please integrate these boxes into the running text at an appropriate place.

Notes and warnings (cave)

Depending on the journal, you may want to use mnemonics in which you point out key aspects (= no repetition of previous parts of the text). Formulate caveats if the mnemonic explicitly warns of dangers or common misconceptions. The length of the caveats should not exceed 250 characters including spaces. Please integrate the caveats into the running text in the appropriate place.
